Design Rule 6

An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth by designer Bruce Mau

GO DEEP.

The deeper you go the more likely you will discover something of value.

The reason why I chose this was because it reflected my personal workflow of taking time to really understand how things work / also optimize them. I think that Bruce is trying to imprint the idea that not taking things for surface value and really digging deep on why things are the way they are is when you can discover more creative or novel ideas regarding design.

During my own projects regarding sketching it was a lot more simple to follow this rule because the scope of the project was quite narrow. This was because I could solely focus on the item in front of me (such as an alarm clock) and I could take my time to slowly analyze everything which made it "tick" (pardon the pun).

Still, as we moved forward in the course and the scope became wider (Such as when we did the PSA for issues on campus) I was still able to go deep on the subject material and investigate what issues we wanted our PSA to address. After brainstorming with my group we decided to look into food accessibility on campus. If I had just taken the problem at face value and recommended students just visit the campus website, I wouldn't have discovered some of the more niche or under utilized opportunities which the campus really provided such as fresh fruit and veggie markets, pay what you can meals, and other resources that the university provides students to help them. Going deep on the subject also helped me become more motivated to complete the PSA and understand the importance of our message.

Lastly, working on the project 2 environment design was a bit of a challenge considering that the project scope was quite monumental. Because there were so many variables to think of and factors to integrate it became an issue where I found myself struggling to really go deep into things which I wanted to go deep on becoming time constraint or sheer work load. I decided to compromise and rely on my other group members on different parts of the project which allowed me to go deep on ideas which would improve our project such as looking into sustainability improvements which resulted in the addition of solar panels to our project and I also made them tilted because this was how in real life they are positioned in order to capture the most sun. It also allowed me to analyze the building and come up with the idea of it representing "Turtle Island" which we ended up incorporating inside of our final design.

My philosophical stance of going deep on projects means that in the future I will be able to collaborate and solve problems better due to my attention to detail and willingness to research topics and find ideas or solutions well beyond the surface level. I prefer this as it makes me valuable as a team member and my INTEG 121 class prepared me well for this.
